This training allows participants to learn and practice the evidence based practice of motivational interviewing.

1. Participants will be able to describe the following motivational strategies and techniques: Reflection, Affirmation, Summary, and Open-ended Questions.
2. Participants will learn how to identify, elicit and respond to Change Talk
3.  Participants will learn effective ways to provide information.

Fran is a Licensed Psychologist who worked for RADIAS and ReEntry House from 1984 until 2017. She now conducts training for various agencies, including RADIAS on mental health-related topics. She is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers. She also runs online support groups for cardiac arrest survivors and their families and is a Leave No Trace Master Educator.

Objectives: 

 

    • Participants will increase their understanding of the definitions related to the LGBTQ+ community  

 

    • Participants will review terminology pertaining to sex, gender identity, gender expression, gender role, and orientation - and the impacts on the lives of people who identify as LGBTQ+ 

 

    • Participants will become familiar with historical events pertaining to mental health, historical criminalization, social rights movements, and civil rights within the U.S. 

 

    • Participants will gain understanding of current events 

 

    • Participants will review common barrier and corresponding interventions pertaining to social, medical and systemic factors 

 

    • Participants will become familiar with some of the health care services in the LGBTQ+ community 

 

    • Participants are encouraged to explore their own biases related to this subject 

 

    • Participants are encouraged to consider their role as an ally or as a member of the LGBTQ+ community and their work with individuals served 


Zack Sommer is a Human Resources Business Partner at RADIAS Health. With over a decade of experience, Zack has designed and facilitated educational programs on mental health, sexual health, chemical health, and LGBTQ health outcomes. His experience includes providing training to service teams within nonprofit organizations, colleges and universities, and hospital environments throughout the metro area. He has also presented at local, regional, and national conventions. Zack holds a Bachelor’s degree in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies and a Master’s degree in Human Resources Management.

Trainers: Laura Lynett, LPCC, Therapist; Brooke Schultz, MSW, LICSW Director of Residential Treatment and Supportive Housing

Length: 6 training hours

Objectives:

 

    • Participants will have a better understanding of Borderline Personality Disorder, and will be able to outline the philosophy and foundation of DBT.

 

    • Participants will learn and practice validation strategies to assist people who experience significant dysregulation.

 

    • This course will provide a basic understanding of Borderline Personality Disorder. It will outline the philosophy and foundation of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and highlight the skills and practice relevant to the participants’ practice. Participants will work together to determine validation strategies and practice/role play them.

 

Brooke has worked in the behavioral health services since 1994 in various roles, including supportive housing, case management, therapy, program management, clinical supervision, and agency leadership. Brooke has provided trainings within and outside of RADIAS since 2007. Topics have included Conceptualization of Borderline Personality Disorder and Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Concepts of Person-Centered Planning, Treating Co-Occurring Disorders, Fundamentals of Mental Illness, and Compassion Fatigue.

Laura has worked for RADIAS Health since 2007.  She worked with clients with Borderline Personality Disorder, and other diagnoses, for 9 years in the RADIAS Health RSS program.  She has provided adherent individual and group Dialectical Behavioral Therapy since 2015 through RADIAS Health’s DBT program.  Laura also provides outpatient therapy and leads several outpatient therapy groups, including an advanced, aftercare DBT group for clients who have graduated from an adherent DBT program.  Laura is a DBT-Linehan Board of Certification, Certified Clinician™.  Laura co-facilitates the Introduction to Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills training and leads the Applied DBT Skills training.

This training will include a focus the use of task breakdown, individualized intervention planning, and the use of tools and formal structure to build skills for managing symptoms and skills across all functional domains.

Objectives:

 

    • Participants will receive training on the foundational principles of psychiatric rehabilitation

 

    • Participants will learn to connect symptoms to functioning, and functioning to intentional interventions.

 

 

Jessica has worked for RADIAS Health since 2009 and has been on the same Assertive Community Treatment team.  She is the team’s Team Lead.  Jessica has her master's degree in counseling and has an LPCC license.  She has also trained on topics of self-care and is an TMACT fidelity reviewer.

Crisis Intervention and De-escalation:  Being Effective while Keeping Yourself Safe 

Trainers: Jessica Metkowski-Gulden, LPCC, ACT Manager, Kelsey Gries, FACT Practitioner

This training will provide an overview of crisis prevention, intervention, and de-escalation strategies through early intervention and nonphysical methods for preventing and managing individuals experiencing a crisis. The course will include discussion of: the crisis development model, staff's attitudes and approaches, non-verbal communication, verbal intervention, precipitating factors of a crisis, importance of developing rapport and knowing clients' history, environmental assessment, rational detachment, and follow up after a crisis. Staff will also learn personal safety techniques in the event a strike or grab occurs during a crisis situation. A post-test will be given to all participants at the end of this training.

Kelsey has worked for Radias Health since 2016 with the Forensic Assertive Community Treatment (FACT) Team. Prior to joining the FACT Team, Kelsey worked in a residential setting at an IRTS facility. Kelsey is passionate about working within forensic mental health and partnering with community correction providers to support individuals with managing their mental health while addressing criminogenic risk factors that often lead to recidivism. Kelsey has a master's degree in Forensic and Legal Psychology.
