Psychiatric medications are often used in the management of mental health and substance use disorders. Various medications affect mood, attention, behavior, and thought processes. This training will provide an overview of commonly prescribed medications, what they are used for, and associated side effects. This training contains significant medical terminology

    • Participants will increase their understanding of the definitions related to the LGBTQ+ community  

 

    • Participants will review terminology pertaining to sex, gender identity, gender expression, gender role, and orientation - and the impacts on the lives of people who identify as LGBTQ+ 

 

    • Participants will become familiar with historical events pertaining to mental health, historical criminalization, social rights movements, and civil rights within the U.S. 

 

    • Participants will gain understanding of current events 

 

    • Participants will review common barrier and corresponding interventions pertaining to social, medical and systemic factors 

 

    • Participants will become familiar with some of the health care services in the LGBTQ+ community 

 

    • Participants are encouraged to explore their own biases related to this subject 

 

    • Participants are encouraged to consider their role as an ally or as a member of the LGBTQ+ community and their work with individuals served

Dr. Willie Garrett, former President of the Minnesota Psychological Association,  is a leader within the delivery of culturally competent care.  Dr. Garrett has over 30 years of experience treating individuals and families in trauma recovery, grief management, depression, and anxiety treatment, and work adjustment consulting. In this training, Dr. Garrett will lead participants in exploring how cross-cultural communication and cultural adaptations can influence how people access care. Participants will increase skills and confidence for assessing and modifying their approach to maximize the delivery of culturally congruent care.

Training Objectives

  1. Learn to identify the narrow definitions valued in American culture and the harmful effects on helpers and clients.
  2. Learn the hidden cultural behaviors of BIPOC groups and how helpers interpret these behaviors. Including concepts of family, parenting, safety, externalizing behaviors, and non-verbal communication styles.
  3. Learn to Identify invisible racism, the intersectionality of oppression, and the adaptable behaviors of historically underserved groups.
  4. Based on knowledge of adaptive behaviors and communication styles, learn strategies for incorporating cultural considerations into assessments and treatment interventions, to aid in the delivery of culturally congruent care.
  5. Learn the different suicide methods and emotional behaviors of BIPOC groups.

Homelessness is becoming more and more common among the people served by RADIAS Health.  We offer this training to increase awareness, skill, and knowledge of available resources to support people we serve who are experiencing homelessness.

 

Objectives:

Attendees will be able to identify contributing factors to both short term and long-term homelessness

Attendees will learn strategies for engagement with people experiencing homelessness

Attendees will be aware of local resources available for persons who are in shelters and those who are living outdoors.
